Laboratory Quality Analysis and Management

What is Laboratory Quality Analysis and Management

Chemical measurements are essential in many different fields (e.g. environmental, geology, medicine, biology). Important decisions are often based on these measurements, for example, whether food is suitable for consumption, if goods can be sold, how a patient should be treated. In addition, chemical measurements are often mandatory in support of legislation (related to health care and trade), production processes and societal problems. At present, the world of chemical measurement is undergoing major changes on an international scale. International free trade has meant that initiatives are being taken at the international level and across measurement sectors to ensure measurement science (metrology) issues are being applied in a systematic and consistent manner. This means that for practising analytical chemists, training in quality assurance and metrology is essential to ensure that the quality of their chemical measurements is within international acceptance levels.

About the Laboratory Quality Analysis and Management Program

In collaboration with The National Measurement Institute (NMI) and The National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA), Macquarie University is offering a new postgraduate program in Laboratory Quality Assurance and Management to train graduates with familiarity and understanding of the increasingly stringent rules and requirements in advanced chemical laboratory quality assurance and management. Depending on the number of credit points earned, candidates will complete the program with a Master, Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate qualification.

Who is the Program For?

The Diploma program and the Postgraduate Certificate program are most appropriate for science graduates who are increasingly engaged in work related to analytical chemistry. The Master program is primarily designed for practising analytical chemists, laboratory supervisors and/or managers who need to improve their understanding of good quality practice and how to implement this in their laboratory, so as to produce more reliable results, to understand the accuracy of their measurements and to comply with accreditation requirements. The full-time Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Master programs are designed to take 0.5 years, 1 year and 1 year, respectively, for completion.

Program Aims?

The new postgraduate degree program in Laboratory Quality Analysis & Management program aims to:

  1. produce graduates at the Postgraduate Certificate level with an appreciation of and hands-on laboratory experience in basic analytical chemistry;
  2. produce graduates at the Diploma level with a sound knowledge of analytical chemistry, supported by some basic understanding of good laboratory practice, quality assurance;
  3. produce graduates at the Master level with an appreciation and understanding of contemporary areas of quality assurance in analytical chemistry;
